Unrealistic Expectations

Don't # 3

Don't ignore the problem.

Action

Don't ignore the fact that the family may be overly optimistic.

The family may attempt to block discharge if their expectations are not met or they may become extremely angry and difficult to deal with concerning treatment issues.

A better outcome is possible with early and continued conversations concerning realistic expectations for the patient.

In addition, documentation of your conversations with the family are important.

Families may deny being told that the patient may never return home or may die in the near future because they don't want to accept it.

  • Don't ignore failure to accept painful information.
  • Converse with family early and consistently.
  • Document your conversations.
