Geriatric Quick Consult      Pressure Ulcers      Don't #7

Don't use povidone-iodine or hydrogen peroxide on wound.

Knowledge Action
Topical antiseptics (povidone-iodine, hydrogen peroxide, acetic acid, sodium hypochlorite solution) are toxic to human fibroblasts and can interfere with healing.

The one exception may be the first few days of treatment for a wound with extensive necrosis and infection.

See: order appropriate wound care.
  • Avoid topical antiseptics.
