All nursing homes in Virginia are licensed by the Virginia Department of Health. Those that accept Medicare or Medicaid are also certified by the Department of Health and must meet federal as well as state requirements.
Nursing homes provide several types of care including general nursing, assistance with ADLs and administration of medications, and skilled care such as wound care and rehabilitation. In general, nursing homes are appropriate for persons with needs in 3 or more ADLs or with skilled needs or rehabilitation needs.
The Virginia Uniform Assessment Instrument is a comprehensive form that is accepted by the majority of nursing homes in Virginia and is generally completed by the social worker, physician, and therapists and is often the primary source of information for the admitting nursing home.
Patients are visited by their physicians on admission and then every 30 days for the first 90 days and then every 60 days thereafter.
