More About Medicare and Medicaid.

Medicare

Medicare is available to persons 65 years and older and to the disabled and with ESRD. To obtain Medicare benefits, one must apply for them. Medicare part A covers inpatient hospitalization and a short stay in a nursing home following a hospitalization. Part A also covers home health if a skilled need is certified by a physician and the care is for a limited time (this generally means for rehabilitation purposes). Part B of Medicare requires a co-payment and covers physician visits, some outpatient services-such as physical and occupational therapy, and medical supplies. MEDICARE DOES NOT PAY FOR EXTENDED LONG TERM CARE. Medicare covers the entire cost of the first 20 days of skilled care and then all but $87.00/day from the 21st day to the 100th day.

Medicaid

Medicaid is a state-administered health program for persons with low-income that may help pay for home health, personal care, adult day health care and long term care. Eligibility is based on income and assets (savings accounts, property, etc) and treatment covered by Medicaid must be provided by a certified agency under a plan of treatment prescribed by a physician.
