Geriatric Quick Consult      Medications to Avoid in the Elderly      Do #7

Monitor elderly patients closely for adverse effects when adding new drugs

Knowledge Action
Careful monitoring for adverse events is especially important for elderly patients.

The incidence of adverse drug reactions is two to three times that found in younger adults but may be underestimated because adverse reactions may go unrecognized.

The symptoms of an adverse drug reaction may be mistaken for normal aging or worsening of a chronic illness.

Some symptoms associated with adverse drug reactions include:
  • Fatigue
  • Confusion
  • Agitation
  • Falling
  • Dizziness
  • Constipation
  • Blurred vision
  • Depression
Lack of monitoring and follow up is one of the most common causes of preventable medication error in the elderly.
  • Monitor adverse events carefully.

  • Don't mistake symptoms for aging or worsening of a chronic illness.
