Geriatric Quick Consult      Falls in Older Patients       Don't #2

Don't place/leave bladder catheters in.

Knowledge Action

Foley catheter should be considered one-point restraints as they reduce mobility. Foley catheters also increase the risk of UTIs and delirium (see delirium).

Generally, the reasons for the Foley are over-rated. You can assess volume status by weighing the patient. Skin care can be handled with diapers, barrier creams, and scheduled toileting. This may involve some extra nursing work, but it will produce better patient outcomes.

  • Remove the bladder catheter as soon as you can.
