Geriatric Quick Consult      Decision-making Capacity      Don't #3

Don't hurry the consent process

Knowledge Action
In today's world, most of us are in a hurry, and this is particularly true in the setting of an acute care hospital.

Informed consent, especially for a procedure with high risk, can sometimes require time for the patients and families to absorb and process the information.

Give the process all the time that you can.

Let the patient and/or family think about the decision and come back to talk with them again later.

If it is necessary to push for a quick decision, do so gently and sympathetically.
  • Don't hurry the consent process.
